Green Lantern
All though it was pretty far from a great movie or even from pretty good, this alright film was worth my money and time. Well as expected the acting was splendid and even included number 5 on my female crush celebrity crush list and number 9 on my male crush list: the splendid Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Everyone who says Blake Lively can’t act can just go suck a dick, she’s a pretty good actress. I mean she isn’t great but she does her job and she’s cute. She is definitely the hottest girl on television right now and this isn’t just because of her boobs. Her face is absolutely gorgeous and that cute little cleft chin is marvelous. As usual Ryan Reynolds was able to pull off the role of being a douche and kind of full of himself. Blake Lively on the other hand, was able to play that super sexy out of your league type chick much better than Megan Fox. I honestly can’t see what people like about her. I mean she’s sort of hot, but not really. Her default face is a frown so she just looks angry and mean all the time. Also as usual Mark Strong is hiding in the movie somewhere hidden in the background. That man is ridiculous, you see his name in the credits and you can never find him cause I feel like he is just that great of an actor. He is super versatile, plays every role spot on, and isn’t always striving for the limelight. This guy is really someone who likes to stick in the background which is surprising considering how great of an actor he is. I feel like he plays every single role he’s cast in perfectly. Apparently Geoffrey Rush voiced a character in this movie but that character didn’t seem to be that important. I would say the rest of the acting wasn’t too shabby but it wasn’t great.
The dialogue was pretty much horrendous. The script was almost as cheesy as Star Wars Episode III to be honest. I’m sorry. It was that bad.
I don’t think there’s much else I need to talk about, I found this movie somewhat confusing. I don’t really know. I guess the thing I liked the most about the movie was how ridiculously sexy Blake Lively was and how charming Ryan Reynolds was.
I would give this movie a 7.3 just because I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt. I’m hoping that those eight minutes that I dozed off during would help to explain the movie better.
Sleeping In Parking Lots by Joe Lengson
Okay, to be honest this book was quite a letdown. I finished it, put it down and said “wow, this was a terrible book.” Sure, it was interesting. Sure, it let me in on the life of a member of one of my favorite bands, but it was as if this book wasn’t even edited. The grammar was terrible, and many of the American idioms were wrong. It’s almost as if the author does not know the difference between passed and past, descent and decent, quite and quiet, and past tense and present tense. It is definitely not worth the $18 that this book is being sold for. The author also seems to insist on making these incredibly annoying allusions that play no significance whatsoever. The fact that he has quite a large vocabulary is offset by the fact that he cannot use said vocabulary correctly in a sentence. I also highly doubt his claim that he likes to read given the fact that he has no grip on English grammar whatsoever. The worst part is that his self-confidence is so low that he has to include phrases like “I swear I’m not making this up,” just to get the already believing reader to believe him. Furthermore his inability to distinguish between present tense, future tense, and past tense makes for a very painful book to read. The only reason why I finished it was entirely because he’s in a band that I like very much. To sum up, in nearly every chapter he talks about his ex-girlfriend and how he’s over her which gets exceedingly annoying. The last thing I would like to point out is that he starts out each chapter as if it is part of it’s own separate book, meaning he alludes to the events of a previous chapter but retells the story as if we hadn’t read it earlier. All in all, this was not a good read at all, and I would definitely not recommend it to any friends. No matter how much you love the band Mychildren Mybride no one needs to be subject to such torture as reading Sleeping In Parking Lots. Do not buy it, do not even ask to borrow it from a friend because it is a low quality piece of crap.
Thor
So, to begin with the director is Kenneth Branagh. He has not acted or directed in very many big name films but he certainly has a lot of experience and it shows in this movie. The script also made plenty of sense; it was very cohesive. It made plenty of sense and wasn’t jumpy at all. It was well done and definitely one of the better Marvel movies. It’s funny that DC is revamping all their series too to try and compete with Marvel, but Marvel one ups DC in every single category already. All DC has going for them is Batman. I bet if the weaknesses of each superhero related to human flaws like those of Marvel’s their characters would not be as lackluster. I choose Marvel over DC any day. It seems as if many of the actors and actresses chose to be included in this film as a result of Kenneth Branagh directing it, so he definitely has a big influence in Hollywood.
So for the acting. I thought Chris Hemsworth was the perfect Thor. Let me repeat, PERFECT. Had the deep voice that was expected of Thor, and he has the perfect Scandinavian body structure. Apparently he didn’t start working out until the filming of Thor, but damn does this guy look good. Anyone who says he’s not sexy as hell is obviously lying. He’s one of the most cut actors I have seen in movies recently. I also believe that Tom Hiddleston played Loki PERFECTLY as well. He looked hungry for power, and he had that trait that makes you want to like him and hate him at the same time. I feel like he’s a little bit misguided and I liked that Hiddleston portrayed him this way. I would also like to mention that the little kids looked exactly like the older versions. None of that little kid looks completely different than the main guy type crap that I despise so much. Okay, now for Natalie Portman. Definitely one of my favorite actresses. She’s so cute when she’s angry and as a scientist she is so awkward and nerdy. I love her eyes. They’re bright, beautiful, and piercing. Natalie Portman was always my favorite actress in Star Wars (mostly because Hayden Christensen sucked). Although I feel like this was sort of a strange role for her to play she played it well. She played a good role model to young girls everywhere, telling them that if they really tried at it they could succeed. Anthony Hopkins played Odin well, although I never would’ve known it was Anthony Hopkins if I hadn’t looked at the cast list months in advance. His role as a father just seemed to fit so well. Stellan Skarsgård played Erik Selvig and I feel like he did a good job as well. He was a pretty influential character especially on Natalie Portman’s character of Jane Foster. He did not get much screentime but in what he got he portrayed his character with poise. Now for Kat Dennings, I really like her. Even though she is not the prettiest actress out there she is very cute. Her personality fills in for what she lacks in looks. In all her roles she is always very quirky and that’s what makes her unique. To top that off, she is also very smart; she graduated high school at the age of 14 but she was also home-schooled. In her role as Darcy she clearly put her style into the character and I liked that. So, I was a little hesitant about Heimdall being black but I think Idris Elba was as good as it gets. Maybe making him black was just one of the many quirks and twists that Kenneth Branagh likes to pull out of his sleeve every once in a while. There were also quite a few cameos in this film. As usual Stan Lee and Samuel L. Jackson came in for a little bit, and so did Jeremy Renner. I think that was a great way to bring Hawkeye/Clint Barton into the story. I’m looking forward to seeing Jeremy Renner portray Hawkeye in The Avengers movie. Renner is an actor that I like very much. I don’t know. The acting was spectacular, the script was good. This film was definitely one of the better films put out by Marvel Studios. I would give it a solid 8.6/10
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
So first of all I would like to point out that I’m not quite sure where the title of this movie comes from, not really related to the plotline. But anyways I liked this movie. Well worth paying 11 dollars for this film, 4.50 for a one liter bottle of water may not have been worth it though. I thought the storyline of this movie was much more refined than say Pirates 2 or 3. Pirates 2 was horrendous, it was just terrible. I liked Pirates 3, it was fun to watch. Not the best movie I’ve seen, but it was decent. But anyways, back to the topic at hand. Well anyways, I don’t know what happened to Gore Verbinski. I kind of liked him, but there was a new director in this movie. I guess it may be for the better, some new blood infused into a film franchise that was slowly decaying. I don’t think he did an incredible job but he gave it the amount of blood it needed to keep the franchise going until at least their intended 5th and 6th films. I also kind of miss Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, but I understand their stories are done. There is no reason to continue on about them when there is nothing more to explain about them.
But I am looking forward to the new Three Musketeers movie coming out in October. Logan Lerman, the kid in 3:10 to Yuma. Loved him. Cute kid, can actually act, can’t believe he’s 19 now. Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy. Loved him. Honestly could’ve picked a better looking Darcy but he played the role perfectly. Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle in Punisher Warzone and Redridge in Book of Eli. Loved him in both. To be honest Punisher Warzone was a trashy movie, it was terrible. But Ray Stevenson as a big man is always a great film to watch and waste your time on. As the right hand man in Book of Eli he was just douchy enough for me to hate him but also just witty enough for me to see him as a likeable villain. Okay. Milla Jovovich. Love her. She’s a great actress. Nothing more to say, you guys know how much I love her. And Juno Temple. I loved her in Mr. Nobody. She played the 16 year old version of Anna. I mean this movie is pretty hard to describe but Juno Temple is an actress that I find very cute. Then Christopher Waltz. Didn’t really break out in America until 2009. Inglorious Basterds. I realize that quite a few people do not like that movie but I myself loved it. Typically I do not like Quentin Tarantino, but this movie was good. Christopher Waltz was the perfect crazy German guy. Orlando Bloom. No words can describe how beautiful this man is. Almost everyone knows that I would have sex with this man if I were a a girl and if he weren’t married. Definitely one of my favorite actors. And finally the director is Paul W. S. Anderson who created all the Resident Evil movies which I loved. I mean maybe he isn’t the best director in the world but he certainly does have a lot of creativity and is able to bring his ideas into culmination. Well anyways sorry about that, I realized that I’m actually doing a Pirates 4 review not a Three Musketeers preview.
Well anyways, I didn’t think Johnny Depp could improve on his role as Captain Jack Sparrow but he somehow did it anyways. He really puts his all into every single role even if the movie turns out to be a bad one. He is a very respectable actor and is very versatile. I mean who else is able to act in horror movies (a few Nightmare on Elm Street movies, family dramas (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape), romantic films (Chocolat), thrillers (From Hell), and family films (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and pull each role off perfectly? In Secret Window he was a schizophrenic author, and in Pirates he is a swashbuckling, hearty Captain Jack Sparrow. Seriously, how many other people have such versatility? Penelope Cruz. Great new addition to the series. She just looks so much like a pirate. And I love her chin shape. I just love it. Don’t tell anyone but I think Rebecca Black has the same one. Rebecca Black is probably Penelope Cruz’s daughter. I haven’t really seen her in too many movies but I like her. She’s a beautiful Spanish lady. She just seemed like a perfect daughter of Blackbeard. I don’t actually think she had too many lines in the movie, but from what I saw she’s a pretty good actress. Everyone else was pretty good. (I’m only grouping them together cause I should go to sleep). I found it funny that King George was so ridiculously fat. He was the token fat guy. Just a typical fat guy living in fat culture. I mean the fact that I didn’t see any extremely bad actors means that they were good right? Even the little kid held his own. Oh and that relationship between the priest and the mermaid was quite touching. I thought it was beautiful. I think the actress, Astrid Berges-Frisbey is really cute. She may just be one of my new celebrity crushes. Time to find good wallpapers of her and make her my background. The Spanish and French blood in her mixed just perfectly to create the cute white girl with the Asian eyes that I love so much. (Definitely my type of girl: I like white girls with Asian eyes, but not anywhere near as Asian as Taylor Swift’s eyes. cute brunettes with chins like Penelope Cruz, and Asians from Vietnam or Thailand or the Philippines. I mean I like other girls too, but these girls stand out in my eyes. Other girls will have to fight to get my attention or just look exceptionally beautiful. There are exceptions) So, I guess there were a few things in the plotline that didn’t make much sense, but there were no gaping holes in it. There were no major discrepancies either. I mean, even though I don’t like their style of cramming lots of information into one movie, but in the standards of this style it came out well. Finally, Hans Zimmer is definitely one of my favorite movie score composers along with John Williams. They really know what they’re doing. So the soundtrack as usual was phenomenal. And I love that Jerry Bruckheimer returned to produce this. He expects the best and as such the finished product always comes out great. Also, I loved Judi Dench’s cameo near the beginning of the movie. I remember I used to love seeing her in that tv show way back in the 80s or 90s. I just remember there were always re-runs on PBS and my mom would watch it. To this day I still can’t remember the name of that tv show, but it’s great seeing glimpses of Dench’s talent here and there. She really is a talented actress, and is still one of the best in my book. But anyways time to wrap up. 8.2/10 Looking forward to the 5th movie, cause they definitely made room for that. Also I like that they introduced many new characters, killed a few off, but are able to bring a few back for the next run also. Another thing that I noticed was that two of the officers from the first movie have returned so it made this movie quite a fun experience. 8.2/10 Just because it was better than the previous two movies but not anything spectacular.
CYNE or Cultivating Your New Experience is a hip hop group based out of Gainesville, Florida. They’ve been at it for a while, having formed in 2000. They are rather underground though. They consist of two emcees: Akin and Cise Starr and two producers: Enoch and Speck. Both Akin and Cise Starr have soft, soothing voices while the music in the background is mostly ambient. There are quite a handful of chimes and bells. Each verse is not necessarily political but is much more lyrical and spiritual than mainstream hip hop these days. All in all, CYNE is a rare but exciting experience in hip hop culture nowadays.
Today’s band is Corpus Christi. Granted, they are not a very small band any longer, seeing as though they have over 44,000 friends on myspace, but not many people seem to have heard of them. This is probably partially due to the fact that Victory Records is a terrible label that does not promote their bands very well. Corpus Christi is still really getting themselves out there despite all of this, much more so than they were with their previous lineup. They came out with The Darker Shades of White in early 2009 with a very weird screamer, a black man playing bass, and a decent lead guitarist, and a somewhat ineffective drummer. By the end of the year everyone had left except for the rhythm guitarist/singer who is actually very good. No gay singing here. In July of 2010 they were ready to release their new album titled A Feast of Crows with their new lineup, and damn is this new lineup good. Derek Ayres the new lead guitarist shreds like crazy, Jarrod Christman the rhythm guitarist nails the singing even better in this album, bass is actually present in this album provided by Caleb Rhoads, and the drums are actually quite present and are played by Tyler Jameson. Max O’Connell, the new screamer really belts it out. This new band is so much more technical than they ever could’ve been with the old lineup. The drum fills in this song are perfect. The tone on the guitars might be lacking a little bit of bass, but it’s more of a just a personal preference. Having one guitar with cleanish tone and another completely distorted just creates such a uniqueness that I haven’t seen in a while. Jarrod Christman also seems to have a lot more range in his singing as he did previously, and that solo at the end just fills out such a perfect song.
Monsters vs. Aliens
It was a heartwarming movie to say the least. It wasn’t quite a children’s movie though. I guess it was alright, but I would’ve expected more from such an all-star cast. The script was a little lacking. The voice acting was spectacular though, but what else could be expected from Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Rainn Wilson, Kiefer Sutherland, Stephen Colbert, and Paul Rudd? The soundtrack was interesting, but it was one of those movies where you ask yourself WTF after you watch it. I mean it sort of makes sense but it’s just so ridiculous. I mean it was funny at times. Some quotes include:
- I say we give this alien a green card and make it proud to be an American.
- Sir, it’s dire times like this when I stop and ask myself, what would Oprah do?
- E.T. Go home.
- Boys set the terror level at code brown cause i need to change my pants.
- By Hawkins’ chair.
Maybe I’m more of jerk than I thought I was but I find it hilarious every time someone makes fun of Steven Hawkins. I really don’t know why. I’m terrible. I know.
Well, there’s not much to say about this movie because not much happened but it wasn’t a terrible movie so I will give it a 7.2
I forgot to mention that John Krasinski and Ed Helms make small cameo appearances in this movie which together with Rainn Wilson sum up to the funniest parts of The Office minus Steve Carell. Krasinski and Helms play Jim and Andy respectively and Wilson plays Dwight.
This song is called Hummanequin by The Color Morale. They are a post-hardcore band formed in Rockford, Illinois and are currently signed to Rise Records. So far they have released two albums: We all Have Demons and My Devil in Your Eyes. The latter of which came out earlier last month. To be honest the singing sounds kind of similar to Jonny Craig of Dance Gavin Dance and formerly of Emarosa. I really like the guitarists in this band because although they do sound like the typical post-hardcore guitars there also unique aspects to them. I mean, I don’t listen to that much post-hardcore so the bands have to be good if I’m going to listen to them. Also, the thing that makes this vocalist better than Jonny Craig is that he can scream. And man, can he scream. It’s not the typical whiny, high squeal that is typical of most post-hardcore. It’s throaty and guttural which is the best kind of scream. The mix for at least the album is really good especially since it’s mixed, mastered, and produced by Joey Sturgis. Definitely one of the best in the business. I haven’t listened to their new album yet but I’m definitely going to buy it, and am very excited to hear what they have to play.
I know I feature them a lot on my other blog, but I have to include As They Sleep once again. They are a new band, and I know they’re growing their fan base but they are still not getting the recognition they deserve. They just signed to Solid State recently and have released two albums so far: Blacken the Sun and Dynasty. They are a death metal band from Michigan. They, however, try their best to make every song unique in its own right. I believe that their mix is perfect; not one thing is unbearably louder than another. This track Bedlam of the Nile is from their album Dynasty which is a concept album focusing on tyranny. Some of the references they make include America, Nazi Germany, Ancient Greece, Attila the Hun, and a few more. This track focuses mainly on the tombs of the pharaohs. The next couple of verses start to focus on and point out the numerous atrocities that the Egyptian people had to face. The song ends with lyrics focusing on despair and what to do after the fall of the pharaohs; there was no longer anyone to lead the people. I like how the guitars are pretty technical yet melodic. I also like the incredible range of the screamer. He has such great control, from screeching highs to infinite lows. The two guitars also seem to harmonize each other very well. Bass is also very definite and clear. It has that slightly twangy, deep tone that I love. The breakdown in the middle of the song also isn’t boring or out of place or too long. The song is well constructed to put it simply. This song, unlike many of their other songs does not have a solo which I actually like. It shows that they don’t have to be flashy and technical in order to write a great song.
Notorious
I thought this movie was well directed, well scripted, well acted. I didn’t like how the actors looked nothing like Tupac or Puff Daddy/Diddy/P. Diddy. They could’ve chosen people who looked closer to the real thing, or they could’ve had the real Diddy play Puff Daddy. Would’ve been the same thing. The actor playing Tupac was too skinny and too nerdy looking to be Tupac but he did play the part well. The music was also phenomenal. I mean it’s Biggie Smalls’ music, but I mean they couldn’t have chosen better places to put each song. I especially liked all the scenes with dark rooms and smoke, I found those particularly artsy and appealed very much to me. I also liked the comradery that existed between Biggie and D-Roc. It was touching to see such a good friend, taking the blame for himself because he saw potential in Biggie. This is nothing against the movie but I feel like The Notorious B.I.G. was kind of a dick. He didn’t even so much as tell the girls it was over, he just left and banged more bitches. They really did seem like bitches to him. He has a child with them, then he leaves. He definitely meant something to Lil Kim and he didn’t even tell her how he felt about her then he went and married someone else. I mean, what the hell? And I know he meant well, he loved his mother, but he didn’t treat her too well. I mean him just storming out like that I don’t even know. But anyways, the movie was pretty good, but there were a few things missing in the plotline. But it was still solid. I give it an 8.8
